A fishing shirt is a lightweight performance top built for a long day in the sun and salt. It blocks UV (look for UPF 50+), dries fast when it gets wet, breathes, and moves with you when you cast.
That's the short answer. The longer one starts with what you shouldn't wear.
What Makes a Fishing Shirt Different From a Regular Shirt?
Wear a cotton dress shirt fishing and you'll find out fast. It gets wet and stays wet. It pulls across your shoulders on every cast and can rub you raw under the arms by lunch.
An old T-shirt isn't much better. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, an everyday white cotton tee has a UPF of only about 5. That lets roughly a fifth of the sun's UV straight through.
On the water, the sun gets two shots at you. It beats down from above and bounces back up off the surface. The EPA lists water as one of the things that increases your UV exposure.
A real fishing shirt does four jobs:
- Blocks the sun. A UPF 50 fabric blocks 98% of the sun's rays, and UPF 50+ is the top rating category. Here's what UPF means if you want the details.
- Dries fast. Your sleeves and hem are going to get wet. Nobody wants to sit in a soggy shirt all day.
- Breathes and moves. It should feel like you're barely wearing a shirt when you cast.
- Carries a little gear. Pockets or loops for the stuff you reach for on the boat.
What Are Fishing Shirts Made Of?
Most fishing shirts are made from polyester or nylon, often blended with a little spandex for stretch. You'll see rayon blends too.
The Skin Cancer Foundation names synthetic and semisynthetic fibers like polyester and rayon as the best choices for sun protection. It also notes that denser fabrics block more UV than sheer, loose ones.
The fiber is only half of it. The weave matters just as much. How tight the fabric is knit decides how much air moves through, how fast it dries and how much light sneaks between the threads.
Here's what's in ours. Most of our fishing hoodies are 100% moisture-wicking polyester. Our Pro+ fabric is a 95% poly, 5% spandex blend for extra stretch, and both are built on UPF 50+ fabric.
What Are Fishing Shirts Called?
Depends who you ask. Performance shirt, sun shirt, UPF shirt, fishing hoodie, vented button-down. They're all the same family.
If it blocks the sun, dries fast and was built for a day on the water, it counts.
Why Do Fishing Shirts Have Long Sleeves?
On a boat there's no shade to duck into. The sun works on your forearms and neck from the first cast to the ride in.
That's why most fishing shirts are long sleeve, and the Skin Cancer Foundation recommends long sleeves whenever you can. Lately the hood has become standard too, for your ears and the back of your neck.
I didn't buy the hood thing at first. Here's what changed my mind.
The Day I Became a Hoodie Guy
I grew up in the country west of San Antonio. I know heat, and I know what a long day of hard work feels like.
Back in 2017 we were selling long sleeve fishing crewnecks, and the fishing hoodie was just starting to catch on. I didn't believe in it.
That year I headed up the coast to shoot photos and content with Chris Caldwell, one of our pro staff guides. I threw on a sample performance hoodie. Chris wore one of our long sleeve performance crewnecks.
We ran the Brazos River early and got into a school of redfish. Great fishing, great pictures and a great day with a good friend.
Around one or two in the afternoon we headed in. I had a three-and-a-half-hour drive back to Corpus, so I swapped the hoodie for a T-shirt and went to say thanks.
Chris was sitting in the living room, red in the face and whipped. He looked up at me and said, "Dude, you don't even look like you went fishing."
That's when it hit me. I wasn't drained. Any other trip, I'd have been dreading that drive home.
Same sun, same boat, both of us in long sleeves. The only difference was the hood. My ears and neck didn't get blasted. His did.
I've been a believer ever since.

Do Fishing Shirts Keep You Cool?
A good one does. Keep it in perspective, though. If it's 95 or 100 degrees and you're sitting in the sun, you're going to be hot in anything.
What a good fishing shirt does is keep the sun off everything it covers, so you're only putting sunscreen on your face and hands. It lets air and sweat move through instead of trapping them.
Some fishing shirts are hot as the dickens. The good ones breathe.
Dark colors aren't a mistake either. The Skin Cancer Foundation says dark and bright colors absorb more UV than whites and pastels, so they protect better.
The Ramp Test
Here's the real measure. When you get back to the ramp and pull that shirt off, how do you feel?
If you're red-faced and worn out, the shirt didn't do its job. You should step off the boat feeling like you could go again.
Are Fishing Shirts Worth It?
If you fish, yes. I'm not saying that because I sell them. I'm saying it because I was the guy who didn't believe it.
Think about a normal Saturday. You want to fish with your buddies, and the family has plans for the afternoon. A good fishing shirt lets you get out early, catch your fish and walk back in the door with something left in the tank.
It's good for more than fishing, too. Beach days with the family, yard work, a day on the tractor. I tell my dad to throw one on when he's shredding our half acre, and he thinks I'm crazy.
It saves your skin, and it saves your energy.
Why Do Fishing Shirts Have a Flap on the Back?
That flap is the vent on the classic button-down fishing shirt. It's become one of the defining features of the fishing shirt, the detail people recognize from across the parking lot.
The idea was airflow across your back. Honestly, it didn't do much. It was usually lined with scratchy old nylon mesh, the same stuff in the liner of the swim trunks we all wore as kids.
A lot of brands, us included, are building a modern take on it. Instead of a mesh-lined flap, laser-cut vent holes in lightweight poly or nylon fabric let the air through without the itch.
That's the idea behind our Torry Button Down, coming in spring 2027. It's a short sleeve button-down fishing shirt with a modern spin on the old vented flap.
Can You Wear a Fishing Shirt to Work?
Across South Texas, and arguably most of the South, the collared button-down fishing shirt has become business casual. It's sharp and collared, and it still breathes in the heat.
At this point it's as much a style as a piece of gear.
Fishing Shirt FAQ
How Do You Wash a Fishing Shirt?
Don't baby it. A good fishing shirt doesn't need special care.
Throw it in the machine with everything else, socks and towels included, and it should come out ready to go. Our hoodies are built to resist shrinking.
How Should a Fishing Shirt Fit?
Roomy enough to cast without pulling across your shoulders. The Skin Cancer Foundation notes that a looser fit protects better than skin-tight clothing, because stretched fibers let more UV through. Check our size chart before you order.
Do Fishing Shirts Have Pockets?
Many do. Button-downs usually have chest pockets, and some hoodies add a front pocket. Our Pro+ hoodies have a welded front pocket, plus thumbholes to keep the sleeves over your hands.
Long sleeves, a hood and fabric that breathes. That's the whole recipe.
